How to Choose a Laptop for Four Years

A laptop is unusual among consumer electronics because so much of it is decided at the factory. Memory, storage and often the battery are chosen once and lived with, and the parts that can be upgraded in practice are a short list. Choosing well means sorting the specifications into two groups: the ones you can change later, and the ones you cannot.

Start with the work, not the specifications

Before comparing anything, write down what the machine will actually do for the next few years. Two or three sentences is enough: which applications, how many at once, whether the screen is used for colour work, whether the laptop travels daily or sits on a desk.

This matters because the same budget buys very different machines depending on the answer. A laptop bought for portability and one bought for sustained processing are designed around different compromises, and buying the wrong one is not fixed by adding memory later.

Memory: the decision you cannot undo

On most thin laptops the memory is soldered to the board. There is no slot, and the choice made at purchase is permanent.

That changes how to think about the number. A configuration that is adequate today may not be in three years, because software and operating systems gradually ask for more, and because browser tabs are the most reliable memory consumers in existence. Buying the next tier up at purchase usually costs far less than replacing the whole machine early.

The same logic applies to whether memory is arranged in matched pairs, which affects integrated graphics performance, but that detail is rarely published clearly. When it is not published, treat the machine as a fixed quantity rather than hoping for an upgrade path.

Storage: capacity, speed and the expansion you will not use

Internal storage is usually fixed too, and the usable figure is smaller than the advertised one. Video, photo libraries, game installs and local copies of cloud files all accumulate.

Speed matters less than capacity for most people. Drive performance affects how quickly large files move and how fast applications open, but the difference between a fast drive and a very fast one is far less noticeable than the difference between having room and not having room.

Expansion slots are advertised heavily and used rarely. If you genuinely move large projects around, a removable card slot has value. If you do not, do not pay for it.

The processor tier and what it does not tell you

Processor names change every generation and mix a marketing tier with a technical description. What they reliably indicate is where the part sits in the range; what they do not indicate is how the machine manages heat.

The number that matters for a laptop is sustained performance — how much work it can do continuously once the chassis is warm. A thin laptop with a powerful chip may only reach that performance in short bursts, before the fans and the thermal limit decide otherwise. A less powerful chip in a larger chassis can be faster for the hour-long task you actually run.

Because this is invisible on the specification sheet, it is worth reading at least one measured review of the model, not the chip.

The screen is the part you look at

Screen quality is where cheap laptops quietly cut, and where the specification sheet is at its least helpful.

  • Resolution below roughly 1080p on a 14-inch or larger panel is visible as softness in text.
  • Panel type determines viewing angles and colour. Cheap panels shift colour as you move off-centre, which matters if you share the screen.
  • Colour coverage is often quoted as a percentage of a standard, and the standard matters. A high percentage of a narrow standard can mean less than it appears to.
  • Brightness determines whether the machine is usable near a window or outdoors. It is also the number most likely to be quoted as a peak rather than a typical value.
  • Finish decides how distracting reflections are. A matte panel in a bright room is often worth more than a slightly better panel with a glossy coating.

Ports, charging and the adapters you will buy

Port count is a reasonable proxy for how much you will need to carry. Consider what you connect on a normal day, then check whether each of those things has a home.

Charging over a standard USB port has made the power brick less of a lock-in than it used to be, but not all ports charge at the same rate, and some laptops only charge quickly from their own adapter. If you plan to travel with one charger for everything, check that the laptop accepts enough power over a standard connection.

Keyboard, hinge and the things reviews mention fleetingly

The keyboard and the hinge are the components most likely to be mentioned in a single sentence of a review and most likely to define daily use. Look for comments about key travel, whether the backlight is even, whether the hinge wobbles when typing, and whether the machine can be opened with one hand.

Support window and repairability

Two questions decide whether the machine lasts as long as you want it to.

How long will it receive security updates? A machine that is fast but unsupported after a short window has a shorter useful life than a slower one with a longer commitment.

Can it be repaired? Look for a published service manual, available batteries and keyboards, and whether the parts are matched to the motherboard by software. Vendor repair programmes and independent parts availability both matter here, and both are published more often than they used to be.

A practical shortlist process

  1. Write down the applications and how many you run at once.
  2. Decide the memory tier first, and treat it as final.
  3. Choose storage capacity before storage speed.
  4. Shortlist two or three models that meet those, then compare screens and keyboards.
  5. Read one measured review of each model, specifically for sustained performance and temperature.
  6. Check the support window and the battery replacement path.
  7. Only then compare price.

Done in that order, the last step is a formality rather than the whole decision. Done in the reverse order, the cheapest machine wins and the next two years are spent working around it.
