A device stops being usable long before it stops working. The processor still runs, the screen still lights, and the battery still holds a charge. What changes is that the applications that matter begin to refuse to install, and the software the device runs stops receiving corrections. That end point is set by the support commitment, which is a published statement about a period of time rather than a property of the hardware.
Buyers compare processors and screens in detail and read the support line, if at all, as a footnote. It is the figure that decides how long the money stays useful, and unlike a processor it does not become obsolete gradually. It expires on a date.
Two kinds of update that arrive together
Support is not one thing, and the difference between its parts explains why devices age so differently.
- Security updates correct vulnerabilities. They matter because a device connected to a network is exposed to whatever is discovered after it was made, and the number of published vulnerabilities rises with time rather than falling.
- Operating system version upgrades add features and change how the platform works, and they are usually limited to a shorter window than security updates.
- Application compatibility follows the system version. Applications set a minimum version, and a device below it cannot install the current release, regardless of its hardware.
- Service-side changes affect the account, store and cloud services the device depends on. These continue for a while after the last security update and then stop, which is why an unsupported device often works well until the day it cannot sign in.
A device with a long security window and a short feature window ages more gracefully than one with the reverse, because the security window is what keeps it safe to use and the feature window merely changes its appearance.
A commitment is not a record
Manufacturers state support in different ways, and the differences are worth separating.
A guaranteed window names a number of years of security updates, usually from the date the model went on sale. It is the clearest form, because it can be checked against a calendar.
A minimum window with a firm date states the same thing more precisely, and it is better still, because it removes the ambiguity of when the count began.
A variable statement ties the period to the model tier, the release year, or the moment of purchase. Statements of that kind are harder to rely on, because the definition can change between generations while the sentence looks the same.
A record of delivered support is the strongest evidence of all. Where a manufacturer has historically updated devices for six years, the record supports the promise. Where a history of updated devices is short, a long promise is an intention rather than a demonstration.
Reading a commitment critically means finding three things: the length, the starting point, and whether the commitment distinguishes security updates from feature updates. Where a statement mentions only feature upgrades, the security position is unstated.
What the end of support actually changes
The end of support is not a switch that disables the device. It is a change in a set of risks and constraints.
The device continues to run the applications already installed, at the versions already installed, for as long as those versions continue to work with the services they depend on. What stops is the arrival of corrections. A vulnerability discovered after the final update remains open, and the exposure grows with each one.
Where the device is used offline for a single task, such as controlling a camera or playing local media, that exposure is small. Where it holds accounts, mail and payment applications, the exposure is larger, and it grows while the device appears to function normally.
The practical reading is that the end of support sets a horizon for the device’s use in a connected, account-bearing role, and not necessarily the end of its useful life in a limited one.
Application minimum versions set a second clock
The support window is not the only date that matters, because applications raise their own requirements.
Each application release states a minimum system version. When an application raises that minimum above the version a device can run, the device can no longer install the current release, and it will not receive security corrections of its own. Banking, messaging and payment applications tend to raise minimums sooner than utilities, because they handle data that attracts attention.
This is why an unsupported device usually fails in a specific order. First the new versions of major applications stop arriving. Then those already installed stop working with their services. Then a task that the device could perform is no longer possible, and the device is retired by event rather than by decision.
The device stops when its applications stop, and its applications stop when the platform version falls behind.
Repairable hardware does not extend support
Repair and support are separate clocks, and they run out independently. A battery replacement extends the hardware, and it does nothing for the software. A device with excellent repairability and a four-year support window will be retired by the software unless it is moved to an offline role.
That distinction changes what a repair is worth. Replacing a battery on a device with two years of support left buys two years of use. Replacing the same battery on a device whose support ends next year buys a year, and the repair should be priced accordingly. Where both clocks are long, a repair is straightforwardly economical.
A rule for judging the support line
Before buying, look for three figures and write them down: the length of the security support window, the date it starts, and the source of the statement. Where a manufacturer publishes a lifecycle page listing models and end dates, that page is the best available answer, and it is worth comparing across the models under consideration.
Then apply a simple test. Take the length of the support window and subtract the number of years the device is expected to be kept. Where the result is two years or more, the device will very likely be retired by hardware failure or by choice rather than by its software. Where the result is negative, the purchase is a short-term one, and it should be priced as such.
The support window is not the most exciting line in a specification. It is the one that determines whether the rest of the specification is still usable in five years, and it is published in advance, which makes it free to check.
